Virginia Railroad Remote Video Survallience System
Security on a railroad bridge is important. It is not always easy to make sure that local residents have not climbed on the bridge, especially if the bridge has to open for river traffic. A railroad company wanted to install cameras on one of their bridges to protect against such a situation. This particular bridge rotated at the center of the river to allow river traffic, therefore, it was not possible to directly wire cameras on either shore as well as the center bridge section.
The solution was to convert the camera coax signal to a MPEG format using analog-to-digital converters and then to transmit the MPEG across the river to surveillance center. Cameras and radios were placed on each side of the bridge and on the center rotating section. Omnidirectional antennas were used so that the radios would be in communication while the bridge was openning or closing. |
